A Bolt from the Blue

What really revolutionized weaponry was the invention of gunpowder, usually attributed to the Chinese firecracker-makers of the 9th century.

Gunpowder was introduced into Europe in the 1300s. Field artillery and cannons were first used by the Dutch.

The first advertised radio broadcast was transmitted from Brant Rock, Massachusetts, on Christmas Eve of 1906 by Professor Reginald Aubrey Fessenden. But the first radio station with a regular broadcasting schedule KDKA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—did not come on the scene until 1920.

Today, there are more than 4,370 AM stations and 2,350 FM stations broadcasting in the United States.

The U.S. National Safety Council's Report for 1943 told of a soldier being welded into his sleeping bag when the zipper was struck by lightning.

The startled soldier had to be cut loose.
